As we approach Halloween, here are some more tips to help your child prepare for the events!
Costumes-Try on costumes well in advance. Wear around the house. Remove or adapt any uncomfortable parts.
Sensory-Consider all 8 systems when considering this holiday and your child's individual differences.
Environment-Consider where you will celebrate and trick or treat ie. Parade, party, door to door. Think about each setting and how to make it successful for your child. Each location may need a separate plan.
Role-playing-pretend in your home and consider different situations that might come up. It is easier to do this when the environment has lower sensory demands. Read books and make social stories to reinforce the experiences.
Practice-now go out into the real world and practice what you will do.
Sensory-regulation-on the actual day of the events, do sensory warm-ups, breathing activities, re-read books/social stories and any other prepared preparation activities.
Body readiness-bathroom, food/hydration, sleep.
Supports-Bring sensory, visual-cognitive and hydrate supports. Include noise cancelling headphones, earmuffs, etc.
Alternatives & Expectations-Bring other choices (ie. different costume, candy bag). Shorten time, change route, make group smaller are all examples to help make a successful experience.
End with positive memories!
